Maelstrom orbits a red dwarf, tidally locked and broken into three worlds. One face basks under eternal crimson light. The other lies shrouded in absolute darkness. Centered on the light side, an unending storm swirls, a maelstrom of thunder and wind that never ceases.
Humanity arrived on a colony ship, seeking sanctuary. They made landfall on the sun-side, building the city of Landfall in defiance and hope. But they were not the first. Ancient fey courts older than memory already claimed every corner of this strange world. The humans persist, carving a precarious foothold in the Shining Lands, caught between the ambitions of divine and alien powers.
In this realm where day never breaks and night never falls, where the very sky bleeds purple and gold, survival is not given. It is stolen from the hands of those who would deny it. The question is not whether you can survive. The question is what you will become.
What makes Maelstrom unique?
On the light side of Maelstrom, there is no night. A red sun fixed on the horizon bathes the Shining Lands in perpetual crimson light. Time flows past, tracked by clock tower bells and watch shifts, not by the routine mercy of darkness.
At the substellar point directly under the sun's light, an eternal maelstrom rages. Hurricane-force winds and nearly opaque cloud cover swirl above the sea, and something dark and magical keeps the storm going at all costs
Ancient courts claim dominion of the various lands on both the light and dark sides, as well as in the twilight regions. Each of the fey courts has their own ancient power, strange customs, and mysterious agendas.
Flora evolved under a red dwarf's light grows in deep purples, blacks, and crimson. The very plants themselves are alien. The sky is wrong. Everything beautiful is dangerous. Everything dangerous is beautiful.
Humanity did not begin here. A colossal colony ship fled a dying land across interstellar space, carrying thousands of sleeping colonists into the unknown. Centuries after the crash, humanity still struggles to exist here.
Something older than the fey stirs beneath the surface of this world. It has no name the living should speak. It slips between thoughts. And it has been waiting a very long time to resume its place among Maelstrom's gods.
Maelstrom: Shadows of Landfall is an original fictional world, created by Asherion and designed primarily as a TTRPG campaign setting for campaigns run in the Nimble game system. The world is currently in active development, and is the setting for ongoing campaigns and in-progress fictional content.
Maelstrom is a place of dark secrets, ancient powers, and the creeping dread of something that whispers between thoughts. It is a setting for stories of survival, ambition, revelation, and the terrible beauty of a world that was never meant for humanity.
