A Tidally Locked World
The planet called Maelstrom by its human inhabitants synchronized its rotation with its orbit eons ago, creating a world of eternal extremes. One half basks in perpetual daylight; the other remains shrouded in endless night. Between these realms lies a region of perpetual twilight. Maelstrom tightly orbits a red dwarf star, causing the light side to be tinged in perpetual shades of red with its sun looming large in the sky. The planet is shielded from the resulting lethal heat by the massive perpetual storm that gives the world its name. It spins eternally over the ocean at the point that directly faces the sun, dissipating heat and maintaining the fragile existence of the planet's inhabitants.
However, the humans are not the true rulers of this world. The collection of native creature types that they have dubbed "the fey" have been here for millenia, and are ancient, powerful, and utterly alien in their motivations. Humans have lived here for mere centuries, slowly growing their presence to build out a single city and its surrounding land, trying to carve out a place in a world that was never meant for them.
The shadows holds secrets, frozen nightmares, and death. The light promises both salvation and mortal peril, and the distinction between ally and enemy shifts like the eternal twilight itself.
